Pump Jacks Sweep Doubleheader to End Marshals Playoff Chances
The East Texas Pump Jacks swept a doubleheader in Dallas on Tuesday night over the Texas Marshals by winning game one 11-0 and game two 5-1. In doing so, the Pump Jacks secured the fourth and final playoff spot in the Texas Collegiate League postseason by knocking the Marshals out of contention.
The Pump Jacks scored in every inning except the sixth in game one of the doubleheader as they shutout the Marshals 11-0. The Marshals managed just four hits in the ballgame. Three were given up by Pump Jacks starter John Jaeger who tossed five innings to pick up the win. Jaeger walked one and struck out two. Kyle Garvin tossed the final two innings allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Spencer Goodwin, Carlos Vargas, Daniel Rushing, and Alex Gosser each hit a single in the game for the Marshals. Rushing added a stolen base.
The Marshals knew that they needed a win in game two of the doubleheader to keep their playoff hopes alive, but would fall by a final score of 5-1.
The Pump Jacks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Joe Moroney.
As the game was about to enter the bottom of the second inning, a lightening delay occurred which turned into a two-hour rain delay. When the game was resumed, Logan Sepanek hit an RBI groundout that scored Carlos Vargas in the bottom of the second to tie the game up at 1-1.
The game remained tied until the top of the seventh inning. The Pump Jacks broke the game open by scoring four unearned runs with the help of two crucial errors by the Marshals defense.
Dan Hawk pitched well in relief, but took the loss for the Marshals. He allowed just one hit and three walks across three innings with five strikeouts.
With the losses, the Marshals fall to 19-35 overall and 11-16 in the second-half. The Pump Jacks advance to the playoffs by improving to 22-33 overall and 13-14 in the second-half.
The TCL postseason bracket is now finalized as the #1 seed Brazos Valley Bombers will host the #4 seed East Texas Pump Jacks in the first round. And the #2 seed Victoria Generals will host the #3 seed Acadiana Cane Cutters.
The Marshals will wrap up the 2014 season with two road games in Bryan on Thursday and Friday nights against the Brazos Valley Bombers at Cellucor Field.
