Princeton Rays Announce '07 schedule

February 12, 2007 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Princeton WhistlePigs News Release

The Princeton Devil Rays have announced their schedule for the 2007 Appalachian League season and it indeed will have a unique look as the result of the Appalachian League playing with only nine teams this upcoming season. The nine-team look for the Appy League resulted from the Toronto Blue Jays leaving Pulaski at the conclusion of the 2006 season and a new major league affiliate was unabled to be secured. As a result, with an uneven number of teams in the league, one league team will not be playing every day of the schedule. P-Ray fans will learn that first as, even though the league schedule will begin on June 19, the P-Rays will be idle for the first two days of the season and will begin play with a 7:00 p.m. home game versus Kingsport on June 21.

Opening night festivities on June 21 will kick off the season with a bang as admission will be absolutely free (no ticket required) courtesy of First Community Bank.

"Most teams would not even consider doing a free gate on opening night, but if we are going to get new people interested in what we have to offer through a free gate, I feel we need to do it at the beginning of the year so they will come back again and again," said P-Rays' General Manager Jim Holland.

For people who love their baseball, the P-Rays will take part in three special "day-night" doubleheaders that results from having the nine-team format. On June 30, the P-Rays will host the Bluefield Orioles in a Saturday noon game and then make the twelve mile journey across the county to visit the O's for a 7:00 p.m. game that evening. Those times and sites will be reversed for a pair of games between the two cross-county rivals on July 14. In addition, the P-Rays will play a noon game at home on Tuesday, July 24 versus the Burlington Royals and then host a 7:00 p.m. game versus Bluefield that evening.

"This schedule is certainly different but we travelled this road before when the league only had nine teams in 1996. We played a noon game in the middle of the week last season that was one of our most successful promotions of the year so playing a day game here and there certainly does not bother us," commented Holland, who added that P-Ray fans are faithful attendees no matter what time the team plays.

With the exception of the noon games previously mentioned, home game times for the P-Rays will remain the same in 2007 with Monday through Saturday games starting at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday games starting at 5:30 p.m. All doubleheaders will begin at 5:30 p.m.
