Pride Win First Series of Second Half
August 24, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
American Defenders of New Hampshire News Release
Over the weekend, the Nashua Pride played perhaps their best baseball since June, outscoring Somerset 18-6 and winning three straight for the first time since a six-game win streak June 22nd - 27th.
It was an all-around effort from the offense, defense and pitching staff. In yesterday's 6-5 win over the Patriots, Damian Sapp and Glenn Murray connected for back-to-back dingers in the fourth inning, and each is hitting over .300 in the last 5 games, with 5 homers and 10 RBI between the two of them.
Defensively, 2B James Lofton and SS Chris Petersen have recently given signs that the Pride has one of the top middle infields in the league. In Friday's 7-1 win over the Pats, each made spectacular diving plays to preserve the Pride's lead and help out the pitchers. But the pitchers haven't needed much help recently, going 4-1 in their last five games, striking out 31 and giving up 16 ER in 44.0 IP.
Nashua now faces a possible playoff preview against the Long Island Ducks from tonight through Tuesday. Long Island currently sits in first place in the North Division second half standings, and if the seasons ended today, the two sides would face off in the first round of the playoffs. Don't forget that tomorrow and Tuesday night's games are Family Nights, so you can get 4 tickets for just $20. We want to see you here, because as of the today the Pride's average attendence is 1,996...come to Holman and help us reach the magic number of 2,000!

AROUND THE LEAGUE
Long Island Ducks team officials announced they have come to contract terms with minor league veteran LHP Rich Kelley and outfielder Wady Almonte. To make room on the roster, outfielder Norm Hutchins and infielder Ryan Dorsey were given their outright release.
"Rich is just the type of pitcher we need for the stretch drive," said Ducks manager Don McCormack. "Wady gives us an offensive boost. Both players are going to contribute greatly to what we are trying to accomplish here.
Rich Kelley is in his thirteenth season of professional baseball and first with the Long Island Ducks. The 33-year old has pitched in both a starting and relief role while registering a career minor league record of 78-91 with 10 saves and an ERA of 3.84 in 380 games. This season with Puebla of the Mexican League, he registered a record of 8-8 with an ERA of 4.88 in 35 appearances. Kelley has spent parts of the past eight seasons pitching on the Triple-A level. The Lakeland, Fla. resident was originally selected in the 20th round of the 1991 draft by the Detroit Tigers.
Almonte returns to the Ducks after spending the 2003 season with Cordoba of the Mexican League. While with Cordoba, he hit .331 with four home runs and 25 RBI in 178 at bats. In 2002 with Long Island he recorded solid numbers, hitting .286 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs in 85 games. For his career, Wady has appeared in 801 games, batting .271 with 79 home runs in 2,809 at bats. In 1999, he had a career-high 17 home runs with Bowie of the Eastern League, the Baltimore Orioles Double-A affiliate. A resident of Higuey, Dominican Republic, Almonte was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Orioles in 1993.
The Ducks also signed and activated C Sandy DeLeon.
