Preview: Skyforce at Salt Lake City
January 7, 2022 - NBA G League (G League)
Sioux Falls Skyforce News Release
The Skyforce embark on a three-game road swing and five games in nine days, starting with an 8:00 PM CST showdown with the Salt Lake City Stars.
Sioux Falls is coming off a 106-94 defeat to the Iowa Wolves on Thursday evening from the Sanford Pentagon. Tarkus Ferguson led the Skyforce with a career-high 23 points (6-8 3PA) and five rebounds in the second half on Thursday. Head Coach Kasib Powell will look for a similar effort from his bench, as the unit posted 45 points. The services of big men Micah Potter and Earl Clark will be welcomed, as Sioux Falls was outscored in the paint 50-26 against Iowa.
The contest on Saturday marks the regular season opener for the Stars. This will be the first meeting between the Western Conference foes since the Skyforce defeated the Stars 104-99 on Feb. 3, 2020, where Miami HEAT guard and former two-way player Gabe Vincent erupted for 27 points.
Salt Lake City went 4-10 in the Showcase Cup but went 2-0 at the Winter Showcase with victories over Cleveland and Lakeland. Guard Carson Edwards led SLC with 24.5 points per game at the Winter Showcase. The team will also benefit from Salt Lake City Jazz two-way player Malik Fitts, who averaged 15.1 points per game in the Showcase Cup.
There is a very popular connection between the two organizations, as Miami HEAT legend Dwyane Wade's son, Zaire Wade, plays for the Stars, and was the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NBA G League Draft. Zaire averaged 4.6 points on 36.2 percent shooting, 1.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 13 games during the Showcase Cup. He posted a career-high 12 points on 3-5 FGA, three rebounds and two steals in a victory over G League Ignite on December 13.
Skyforce forward Pedro Bradshaw spent the first four games of the season with Salt Lake City after being the 10th pick of the second round in the 2021 NBA G League Draft. The Stars also feature former Skyforce forward Gerard Tarin, who played for the team during the 2018-19 season.
