Practice Report: Panther City Lacrosse Club at Rochester
January 7, 2023 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Panther City Lacrosse Club News Release
The Panther City Lacrosse Club arrived in Rochester Friday and went through practice later that evening and held a Saturday morning shootaround. The team is looking to get back into the win column and will rely on its defense to lead the way Saturday evening. Goalie Nick Damude currently leads the league in saves (139) and is second amongst starting goalies with a 9.06 GAA. He is coming off a career-high 48-save night against Saskatchewan. Damude also has allowed the fewest goals in a single game this season in the NLL, only allowing three goals at Las Vegas (12/16/22). He became just the fifth goalie in NLL history to allow three of fewer goals in a regular-season game.
Third-year forward Will Malcom (21 points - 9G/12A) continues to lead the way out of the front door for Panther City and has recorded at least four points in every matchup so far during the 2022-23 season. Malcom has recorded a point in every game he has played in in a Panther City jersey (21 games) and has scored a goal in 20 of the 21 games he has appeared in. He currently has scored a goal in 18 consecutive games and recorded at least 4 points in 13 of his last 14 games dating back to 2/20/22.
Tonight's game will begin at 6:00 p.m. CT / 7:00 p.m. ET on KTXA21 locally in North Texas and also will be streamed on ESPN+.
POST PRACTICE INTERVIEWS
HEAD COACH TRACEY KELUSKY QUOTES
On how the team gets back into the win column...
"We need to score more goals offensively. I think our defense has done a really good job the last couple of games. I thought they played good - they haven't played great. Ultimately, we have to manufacture more than nine [goals]. I told our offensive group if we get 12 [goals] tonight we win."
On how the offense can be successful...
"We need to get inside. We need to get inside more. I think at times we are settling and just a little more consistency with what we are trying to do offensively. We have one or two good shifts and then we mail in three. Every time you step on the floor you have an opportunity to do something. We have to play more urgent and certainly play fast."
On the team rallying together as they are currently amid a stretch of five-straight away games...
"Certainly - 100 percent. The best part of our group is the boys love being around each other. It doesn't matter whether we are in Fort Worth or on the road, but we know we are not going home, but at the same time, we don't want to be chasing. Our objective is and has been since day 1 is to never be below .500 and tonight is putting us up against that ultimate test."
FORWARD WILL MALCOM QUOTES
On how the team gets back into the win column...
"We have to come out, play fast and believe in ourselves. It is not [going to be because of] one guy on this team - we win by committee, so trusting each other."
On what the offense must do to create a spark...
"We have to swing the ball, everyone has to get a touch and start getting inside. We have been playing outside of the box the last couple of games. The key is getting inside."
On what has been key to his personal early season success...
"I think my teammates have putting their belief in me and I am playing with confidence. I am confident shooting the ball and shots are going in."
