Rochester Knighthawks News Release
Johnny Powless won two of the most prestigious awards in Junior "A" lacrosse today. The Rochester Knighthawks forward was honored as the winner of the Jim Veltman Award as the Most Outstanding Player and the Dean McIntosh Award as the Junior "A" MVP.
"It's really nice winning the Veltman & McIntosh awards," said Powless, who plays for the Six Nations Arrows. "I would like to thank my parents and all the coaches I've had along the way. I couldn't have done it without them."
The former first-round pick of the Rochester Knighthawks adds the two awards to his second National Lacrosse League Championship he won in May.
Powless also learned today of his selection as an Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior "A" First Team All-Star. It marked the third time in his career he received an All-Star nod, and second straight season he achieved First Team honors. During the 2013 season, Powless finished second in the OLA Junior "A" circuit with 104 points to give him 361 points (195+166) in just 74 regular season Junior "A" games.
"It's an honor to be selected to the All-Star," he said.
Powless and the first place Arrows hold a 1-0 lead over the Peterborough Lakers in the best-of-seven semifinal series. In Game One, he recorded one goal and three assists to lead the Arrows to a 7-5 victory. Powless' goal early in the third period proved to be a game-winner. He presently leads all players with 36 points (14+22) in just five playoff games.
Game Two of the Ontario Semifinals is set for 8:00 p.m. tonight in Peterborough.
