The Power won the first meeting this year, defeating Boston, 3-2, at Mitchel Athletic Complex on May 10, 2003. Maren Meinert recorded both goals for Boston; Power-Courage Notes: The Power will look to extend their one-game winning streak against the Courage. The Power swept the series in 2001, while Carolina swept the series on their way to the championship in 2002. The Power won the first meeting this year, 3-1, in Carolina.
Key Matchup in Boston Series: New York F Tiffeny Milbrett vs. Boston D Kate Sobrero: Sobrero will have her hands full trying to keep Milbrett off the score sheet. Milbrett has scored six goals and added five assists against Boston, in seven games. Milbrett assisted on two goals the last time these two teams met; Key Matchup in Carolina Series: New York F Tiffeny Milbrett vs. Carolina D Danielle Slaton: Milbrett has torched the Courage for seven goals and four assists. Slaton, who was the WUSA's first draft pick last season, will look to use her speed and National Team experience to slow down the nifty striker. Milbrett tallied two goals against Carolina the last time these teams met.
Power Head Coach Tom Sermanni on Boston: "Boston is a very good offensive club, that can score a lot of goals. They are playing real well right now and should be a good test for us;" Power Head Coach Tom Sermanni on Carolina: "Obviously they are a good team, being last year's champions. They have a very potent strike force, and are another good side. Being last year's champs, teams have been playing them keyed up, showing them a lot of respect."
POWER INJURY UPDATE
OUT: D Sara Whalen (ACL); D Kristy Whelchel (ACL)
DOUBTFUL: F Christie Welsh (L Calve Strain)
QUESTIONABLE: none
PROBABLE: M Krista Davey (R Sprained Ankle)
Power Quotes:
Power Head Coach Tom Sermanni: "I thought that in the first 20 minutes of the second half we had our chances, but we just could not get level. I think on another day, four or five chances we created would have been goals. That is just how the game is."
"That is the type of things that will happen when you are a striker and things are not going your way, you will hit the inside of the post or the crossbar. Millie will get her goals, whether it's next week or the week after. It is not of great importance to me, because I know that she will score."
"I hope that it's not too serious (injury to Christie Welsh). She said that she felt something pop in her calf or knee, but she does not think that it was serious, only the sound of the collision. We will have to see when we get back home."
Power Notes:
Winning Record
This week the Power will travel to Boston to play the Breakers on Wednesday, then host the Carolina Courage on Saturday. The Power hold a 4-3-0 record against both teams. Boston and Carolina are the only teams that the Power have a winning record against.
Someone Will Win
In seven matches against the Boston Breakers, no game has ended in a tie. The same can be said in the Carolina Courage series.
Stopping Boston's Internationals
The key against the Breakers will be the Power's defensive unit stopping the high-scoring tandem of Maren Meinert and Dagny Mellgren. Meinert has torched the Power with six goals and five assists for 17 career points, while Mellgren has tallied seven goals in the series. The Power will also try to contain Kristine Lilly who has recorded eight assists against New York.
