Parlow Named Player of the Week
June 23, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
ATLANTA (Monday, June 23, 2003) - Atlanta's Cindy Parlow has been selected as the league's MET-Rx Player of the Week for the week ending June 22, 2003. Parlow tallied her first WUSA career hat trick, scoring three goals (her first three of the WUSA 2003 season) against the Philadelphia Charge to lead the Atlanta Beat to a 4-2 comeback victory and propelling the team into sole position of first place in the WUSA standings.
Parlow's three goals were the second-fastest hat trick in WUSA history. She scored her three goals in a 21-minute span, snapping a scoreless streak of 801 minutes that dated back to August 4, 2002. The WUSA's fastest hat trick was scored by Philadelphia's Marinette Pichon -- three goals in 13 minutes on July 7, 2002.
With the game tied 1-1 in the 43rd minute, Parlow gave the Beat its first lead of the match with a point-blank rebound shot created by a 35-yard free kick from the right wing. The free kick found Atlanta's Kylie Bivens, who passed it off to Conny Pohlers for the shot. Philadelphia goalkeeper Melissa Moore blocked the shot, but the ball squirted free to the feet of Parlow, who buried it for a 2-1 Beat lead.
Parlow struck again in the 54th minute, heading a corner kick from Nikki Serlenga into the right corner of the net for a 3-2 Atlanta lead. Just 10 minutes later Parlow connected again. Another corner kick from Serlenga found Parlow on the outside left post. The initial shot was blocked, but the rebound came directly back to Parlow, who shot the ball to the inside left post for her third goal of the evening and a 4-2 Beat victory.
Parlow, who received 55 points (24 first place, 7 second place), registered the second largest margin of victory for a 2003 WUSA Player of the Week. San Diego's Julie Fleeting finished second with 18 points (4 first place, 10 second place). Others who received votes were Carolina's Kristin Luckenbill and Erin Baxter, San Diego's Aly Wagner, San Jose's Pretinha and Washington's Mia Hamm. The MET-Rx Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
