Power Weekly Notes

June 2, 2003 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
New York Power News Release

Last Week in Review: May 31 New York Power 2, Washington Freedom 2 @ Rochester, NY (Exhibition Match)

The Power tallied first in the 13th minute, when Shannon Boxx connected on a 23-yard free kick after forward Tammy Pearman was taken down by the Freedom defense. The Freedom answered back in the 22nd minute when hometown hero Abby Wambach finished a feed from Mia Hamm. Hamm raced up the left sideline, putting a beautiful cross into the box to a streaking Wambach who finished the play. Eleven minutes later, Lori Lindsey gave the Freedom a one-goal lead when she drove a hard shot past a diving Saskia Webber. Hamm collected her second assist on the evening as she again moved up the left sideline and found Lindsey open at the top of the penalty box. In the second half the play went back and forth, until second half sub Christie Welsh tied the game in the 77th minute on a shot from outside Washington's penalty area. Welsh collected the ball and slammed a left-footed shot past Freedom goalkeeper Nicci Wright.

Upcoming Week: Power vs. San Jose CyberRays @ San Jose. Season Series: First Meeting. All-time Regular Season Series: San Jose leads 5-0-1. Power-CyberRays Notes: The Power will look to snap a five-game losing streak to San Jose. The teams played to a 0-0 tie in their first ever meeting with San Jose taking the next five games. Besides the last game, a 4-1 loss on July 27, 2002, each game has been decided by a goal or less. LaKeysia Beene has four shutouts against the Power. Tiffeny Milbrett recorded her second career hat trick against the CyberRays last year on June 15, only to have San Jose win 4-3.

Key Matchup: New York F Tiffeny Milbrett vs. San Jose D Thori Bryan: These two world-class speedsters should see a lot of each other in this match-up. Bryan has been able to keep Milbrett off the score sheet in five of the six match-ups. Milbrett was able to explode for three goals on June 15, 2002, recording her second career hat trick.

Power Head Coach Tom Sermanni on San Jose: "It will be fun to go back to San Jose and see a lot of familiar faces. Players that I've helped coach for the past two seasons."

POWER INJURY UPDATE

Power Quotes:

Tom Sermanni (May 24 after Washington game): "At the end of the day they were a little bit too good and a little too successful for us. For the first 20 minutes I thought we were in the game, and I thought we had the better chances."

"The goals we gave up several times tonight just are not good enough for this level. You've got to really make teams work hard for the goals and we just didn't do that - and that killed us."

"We need to put some of those chances away when we get them, and we have flurries of doing and creating things, but the general cohesiveness and quality of play is really not near the quality of play (of Washington)."

"I think some of our players did not show up at the game tonight, not just so much the general lack of quality, but even some of our better players did not show up tonight - though i would eliminate Shannon Boxx and Joey Peters from that because I think they both played outstanding games."

Power Notes:

Points Lacking

Besides Tiffeny Milbrett's six total points against the CyberRays, which she collected in one game, only Emily Janss and Anita Rapp have recorded points against San Jose. Janss has one goal, two points, while Rapp has an assist for a point.

Close Games

Besides the last game, a 4-1 loss on July 27, 2002, each game has been decided by a goal or less. A look at the All-Time scores:

Date Result Score Location Goalkeepers W/T Goal
6/10/01 T 0-0 New York GAO HONG/Beene NA
7/8/01 L 0-1 San Jose GAO HONG/Beene Murray
8/5/01 L 0-1 New York GAO HONG/Beene Katia
5/5/02 L 0-1 New York WILLIAMS/Beene Pretinha
6/15/02 L 3-4 San Jose WILLIAMS/Beene Katia
7/27/02 L 1-4 San Jose WEBBER/Beene Katia

Stopping the Brazilians

The Brazilian trio of Sissi, Katia and Pretinha have accounted for four of the five game winning goals against the Power. Katia has three, while Pretinha has the other one.

Sermanni's Turn

Power head coach Tom Sermanni will try to do something no other Power coach has been able to do so far. Beat the CyberRays. The Power are currently 0-5-1 against San Jose, losing the last five games. Sermanni knows San Jose well, having coached them the past two seasons, before coming to New York.

Time For A Hat Trick?

It's about that time for Power forward Tiffeny Milbrett to record a hat trick. June has been her month, recording both of her hat tricks in it. Her first hat trick came against the Boston Breakers on June 22, 2001. Her second hat trick came against the San Jose CyberRays on June 15, 2002.

WUSA All-Time Leading Scorer

If Tiffeny Milbrett fails to record a point against the CyberRays and Danielle Fotopoulos of the Carolina Courage does tally, Fotopoulos will take over the lead as the all-time leading scorer in the WUSA. Both players are tied with 71 total points. Milbrett has been the top scorer for the past two seasons.

Practice Times

Media representatives seeking to attend a Power practice should contact Darren Hawks (917) 882-6285 or John Sciacca (917) 515-7974 to confirm location and times for training.
