New York Power News Release
New York, NY - New York Power Co-Captains Tiffeny Milbrett and Christie Pearce have been named to the U.S. Women's National Team roster that will train for four days before the team's April 26 match in Washington D.C. against Nigeria, which will be broadcast live on ESPN at 12:00 noon.
The roster size will then be cut down to 18 players who will compete in the match versus Nigeria, which is part of a WUSA/US Soccer doubleheader, with the Washington Freedom hosting the Atlanta Beat following the US match. Kickoff for the WUSA game will be at 2:30 p.m.
Milbrett, who tied a U.S. record with five goals in a match against Panama at the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup last November, is just five goals away from hitting the magical 100-goal mark, an achievement previously reached by just four players in international soccer history, two of them Americans (Mia Hamm and Michelle Akers) and two Italians (Carolina Morace and Elisabetta Vignotto).
Pearce, a U.S. starter in the 2000 Olympics has 91 caps, has become a regular with the team again after suffering an ACL injury at the end of the 2001 WUSA season. She played and started in 19 games for the New York Power in the 2002 season and remains the only player from a small soccer school (Monmouth University in N.J.) to achieve success with the U.S. Women's National Team
In other New York Power news, the Power has signed Keri Sarver as a supplemental player for this weekend's game against the Washington Freedom. Supplemental players are granted by the league based on individual team need due to injuries that result in the team having less than 16 active players.
Sarver, a 5' 4" midfielder from the University of Maryland, finished 9th in total points (9g-7a=25pts) for the Maryland Pride of the W-League in 2002. Sarver was drafted by the Washington Freedom in the 13th round, 104th overall of the 2001 WUSA Draft. She saw action in one game for the Freedom, playing 32 minutes.
The New York Power is one of eight professional women's soccer teams that make up the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), the world's premier women's soccer league. 2003 New York Power tickets are priced at $25, $20, $17 and the addition of a $10 ticket for the 2003 season.
