Beat's Canadian Duo Called up for National Team Duty

ATLANTA (April 11, 2003) - Atlanta Beat forward Charmaine Hooper and defender Sharolta Nonen were called up to the Canadian National Team for a two-game series versus Nigeria on April 18 and April 20 at the University of South Carolina Spartanburg.

Canada is facing Nigeria in preparation for the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup, being held in China in the fall of 2003, prior to the WUSA season. Canada qualified for the 2003 Women's World Cup with a semifinal berth in the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup, behind strong performances from Hooper and Nonen.

The duo last played for Canada at the 2003 Algarve Cup in Portugal, where the team went 1-1-2, with a tie versus the United States, a tie versus Sweden, a loss to Norway and a win over Greece in the placement game.

The Beat opened its 2003 season on Saturday, April 5 at Herndon Stadium in Atlanta with a 5-0 win over the New York Power. Hooper notched a goal and an assist in the game versus the Breakers, while Nonen helped lead the Beat to a shutout victory. The Beat faces the Boston Breakers at home this Saturday, April 12 at 4 p.m. The match will air live nationally on PAX-TV.
