Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

TORONTO, ON – After going 0 for 8 on the power-play last night in Kingston and losing 5-2, not many would have figured that the Toronto St. Michael's Majors would have such amazing success on the man-advantage this afternoon. However, they clearly did as they struck five times while a man-up and defeated the visiting Plymouth Whalers 5-2.

The Whalers got the ball rolling, on the power-play coincidentally, at 2:53 of the opening period when Rane Carnegie connected off feeds from Vaclav Meidl and Tim Sestito. Ryan Rorabeck responded for the Majors at 12:30 of the 1st period with assists going to Ryan Wilson and Sal Peralta. However, Plymouth came right back as captain Ryan Ramsay notched an even-strength goal 53 seconds later with helpers provided by Carnegie and Dan Collins. The Majors were not deterred as Tim Brent responded just over two minutes later with assists credited to Peralta and Tyler Haskins. Therefore, the game was tied 2-2 after the opening frame.

From an offensive standpoint, the rest of the game was controlled by the Majors. Their next three power-play goals came at 13:02 and 19:46 of the 2nd period and 6:04 of the 3rd, courtesy of Scott Lehman and Cory Vitarelli (2), respectively. Assists on these three goals were provided by Brent (3), Rorabeck and Darryl Boyce.

Toronto outshot Plymouth 29-23 for the game and the starting goaltenders were Michael Ouzas for the Majors and Ryan Nie for the Whalers. It was a rough affair as the two teams produced five fights and 120 minutes in penalties. The game's three stars were Brent (1st), Vitarelli (2nd) and Rorabeck (3rd).

The Majors' record now stands at 27-18-6-2. They will host the Saginaw Spirit tomorrow (February 8th) afternoon at 2:00 pm and the Sarnia Sting on Thursday, February 12th at 7:30 pm. Both games are available via webcast on the Majors' web site, www.stmichaelsmajors.com. Individual game tickets can be purchased at the St. Michael's College School Arena box office, by calling Ticketmaster at (416) 872-5000 or online at www.ticketmaster.ca.

During the month of February, paper hearts will be sold at Majors' home games for a minimum donation of $2 as part of the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Paint the Town Red campaign. Donors may honour loved ones by writing their names on the hearts, which will be posted throughout the St. Michael's College School Arena during the month-long initiative.
