
Power Picks Christie Welsh with Second Overall Selection

New York, NY - The New York Power selected Christie Welsh, the only women's soccer player in history to be chosen NSCAA All-American four successive years in college, as their first pick in the 2003 WUSA Draft yesterday. Welsh, a native of Massapequa, NY was the second overall pick in the draft by virtue of an off-season trade with San Diego that sent Jen Lalor, Wynne McIntosh and the first overall pick west to San Diego, in return, the Power received midfielders Shannon Boxx and Margaret Tietjen and the chance to pick up Welsh at number two.
The 5-10 Long Island local, finished her career at Penn State totaling 82 goals and 52 assists for a total of 216 points with 27 game winning goals in her career. She was the 2001 Hermann Trophy winner and MAC Player of the Year.. The 5-10 Welsh scored 12 times in 20 caps for the U.S. Women's National Team.
New York was also pleasantly surprised to pick up Lauren Orlandos in the second round. Orlandos, who had been projected to be chosen within the top six to eight picks was still available for the Power at the beginning of the second round, ninth pick overall. The 5-10 defender anchored the University of Portland National Championship team this year and was named a 2002 first team NSCAA All-American. Orlandos is a three time All-America, with second team selections in 2001 and 2000.
With no third round selection for the Power, due to another off-season trade with San Diego, the Power selected Heather Beem in the fourth round. Beem a 5-6 forward from Clemson University finished eighth in career points (79), tied for sixth in career goals (28) and tied for fifth in career assists (23) at Clemson.
