Pittsburgh Power News Release
Derek Stingley has been named defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Power. Stingley has coached arena football since joining the Macon Knights of the af2 as defensive coordinator in 2005. He was promoted to head coach of the struggling Knights during that season and turned the franchise around, leading the team to the playoffs. During his two-year tenure with the Knights, Derek coached a total of 18 players to All-af2 team recognition. Stingley then became head coach of South Georgia, posting a 30-13 record over three seasons, and was named "AF2 Head Coach of the Year" in 2008.
In 2009, Derek moved up to the AFL, where he served as defensive coordinator for the New Orleans VooDoo before being promoted head coach in 2011. The Voodoo struggled in his first year, but under his tutelage, wide receiver-kick returner PJ Berry was named JLS Ironman of the year, setting an AFL record in all-purpose yards.
A heralded two-sport athlete in high school, Stingley's first choice was baseball. He starred at Purdue University as a centerfielder and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1993, spending three seasons in the club's minor league system before following his true passion, football.
Stingley played for the New York Jets in the NFL prior to his nine-year playing career in the Arena Football League. Starting with the Albany Firebirds in 1996, Stingley went on to play for the Chicago Rush, Arizona Rattlers, Carolina Cobras and the Dallas Desperados. He won an AFL Championship with the Firebirds and was an AFL First Team defensive back. He was selected to the AFL 15-year Anniversary Team.
"Adding someone of Derek's experience, both as a player and coach will be a great help to me and our players," remarked coach Chris Siegfried. "Stingley was drawing interest from many teams and we are excited he chose to be a part of what we are building in Pittsburgh," added owner and general manager Matt Shaner.
