New York Power News Release

San Jose, CA – July 27, 2002 – Playing their third game in seven days, which included an emotional late win against the Philadelphia Charge and an east to west coast swing, the New York Power were defeated by the San Jose CyberRays 4-1 in a game which saw late and often scoring, however this time it was by the opponent and not as the Power had done to the Charge Wednesday night.

Some scoring happened early, as the Power's defense fell victim to the CyberRays offense in the 5th minute as the CybeRays's Sissi took a short corner to teammate Pretinha, whose cross found the penalty area where Webber stopped an initial shot but could not control a long rebound which found the foot of Lisa Nanez fired it home.

The Power seemed to settle down and draw even in terms of scoring chances until the CyberRays found the net again in the 35th minute. Kristina Bell played a ball played a ball over the outstretched head of defender Christie Pearce and onto CyberRays' forward Katia, who stuck a foot in between Pearce and the on-coming keeper Saskia Webber and into the back of the net.

The Power answered back in the beginning of the second half with a goal by Emily Janss in the 66th minute. The Power goal came as forward Tammy Pearman took a powerful shot from the top of the eighteen, which CyberRays goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene could not handle, Janss found the rebound ten yards away and thread the needle into the goal between outstretched San Jose defenders.

Saskia Webber continued playing well in goal for the Power as she turned away quality chances for the CyberRays in the 57th and 58th minutes, both from San Jose Striker Katia. Webber again made an outstretched save on what would have been a sure breakaway in the 82nd minute, but was scored upon just 10 seconds afterwards with a cross from Theresa Wagner which found the foot of Katia for the goal. The CyberRays found the net 56 seconds later when Katia set up teammate Pretinha for the second goal in less than a minute. Webber finished the game with 13 saves.

Power Head Coach Charlie Duccilli commenting on the play of Webber said, "Despite the loss, Saskia keeps coming up with a couple a great saves every game to keep us close. I believe the team is trying as hard as they can and I think that's great," stated Duccilli, "The way the season is going, that's not an easy thing to do."

The Power totaled five shots on goal, all but one coming in the second half and had just two corners to San Jose's six. The loss brings the Power to a record of 3-14-1 and in last place in the WUSA Standings

The Power are back in action on Sunday, August 4th at Nickerson Field when they take on the Boston Breakers at 4pm. The game will be televised on MSG Network.
