New York Power News Release

Boston, MA – August 3, 2002 – The New York Power dropped their second game in a row by the score of 4-1 tonight in Boston as the Breakers defeated the last place Power by the three-goal margin with goals from Angela Hucles, Dagny Mellgren, Bettina Wiegmann and Allie Kemp. New York's lone goal was scored by Tammy Pearman, her third of the season after returning to the forward position.

The Power again fell victim to a 5th minute goal, as in their last 4-1 loss against San Jose when Dagny Mellgren found the net on an assist from Maren Meinert. New York seemed to settle down and controlled the ball in the Boston half. Saskia Webber began to weather the Boston offensive with a breakaway save on Dagny Mellgren in the 14th minute and another one on one save against Kristine Lilly of the Breakers. Boston broke through again in the 34th minute when Angela Hucles connected to send Boston up 2-0.

The second half saw the Power draw closer to Boston and bring the game within a goal when Tammy Pearman connected off a feed from Anita Rapp in the 51st minute. Pearman threaded the needle between the outstretched hands of Breaker keeper Karina LaBlanc and the upper right corner of the goal.

Boston would find some distance between them and the Power in the 61st minute when Bettina Wiegman carried the ball through four Power players and wound up for a powerful shot just beyond 18 yards away to beat Webber to the left. Allie Kemp then tacked on the fourth and final goal for the Breakers in the 80th minute that Webber had gotten a hand on, but trickled through and over the goal line.

Power Head Coach Charlie Duccilli commenting on the game, "Boston was the better team today. I think we had trouble dealing with them in the back and they took advantage of their opportunities."

The Power finished the game with two shots on goal, both coming in the second half, while allowing Boston 14 on goal. Webber finished the game with 10 saves for the Power and has totaled 23 saves in the last two games.

The Power are back in action on Wednesday, August 7th at Mitchel Field when they play host to the Carolina Courage as part of a double header which includes the MLS MetroStars taking on the Columbus Crew as part of the US Open Cup. The Power game will begin at 7pm with the Metros immediately following – the game will be televised on MSG Network.
