Power Defeats Voodoo

April 21, 2011 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Pittsburgh Power News Release

New Orleans - The Pittsburgh Power returned to their winning ways in front of a crowd of 6,937, after a 56-49 victory over the host New Orleans VooDoo. Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Game, Anthony Morelli, went 23-for-35 and 232 yards, to help the team finally put one in the win column.

The game started off slow, after the VooDoo fumbled the ball away on their first drive, and the Power missed a field goal on theirs. New Orleans finally got the scoring going on 5 yard pass from VooDoo QB Danny Wimprine to James Jordan at the end of the first quarter.

The Power controlled the ball much of the second, but still couldn't seem to find a way into the endzone. With 2:37 left in the half, New Orleans increased their lead, 14-0, on a 26 yard pass to PJ Berry. However, Pittsburgh wasn't going down without a fight. After a quick drive, QB Anthony Morelli threw a 12 yard pass to Jason Willis to pull the Power within seven. But they weren't done yet. After recovering a fumble, Morelli connected to Willis once again to pull the score to 14-14. That would be the score at the end of the half.

Pittsburgh came out for the second half just as determined as they ended the first. They scored on their first drive with a 17 yd pass from Morelli to Lonnell Dewalt. The VooDoo answered quickly, however, scoring on their next possession. After two straight touchdowns by the Power, New Orleans finally answered when Berry ran the kickoff return all the way back for a TD. The Power wouldn't be down for long, though. Morelli launched a 31 yd pass to Mike Washington, who went over the boards while catching it. Scoring would go back in forth for the rest of the game, but ultimately the Power would come out on top for the much needed win.

Pittsburgh returns to the road next week, with a Saturday night match-up against the Georgia Force, April 30th.
