New York Power News Release
New Haven, CT - Four separate Power players tallied as the Power defeated the Boston Breakers 4-1 in a preseason scrimmage played at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, CT. The scrimmage was the second of five preseason games the Power will play before opening their third WUSA season April 5 against the Atlanta Beat in Atlanta.
The Breakers got on the board first when Kim Patrick slipped a shot past a diving Saskia Webber. Patrick slipped past the Power defense after a nice pass from Maren Meinert.
The Power answered in the 34th minute, when Australian central defender Cheryl Salisbury found the back of the net after she pounced on a loose ball in the Breakers box. Emily Janss put the Power up 2-1 in the 41st minute. The Power's second round draft pick, Lauren Orlandos played a ball from the back to a streaking Janss. Janss going 1 v 1 with the keeper, faked a shot, then dribbled past her to place the ball into the empty net.
Rebekah Splaine tallied in the 66th minute, off of a great assist from Justi Baumgardt-Yamada. The play started when Baumgardt-Yamada flicked on the ball to a streaking Splaine down the left sideline. Splaine did the rest, scoring her second goal of the preseason. The Power finished the scoring in the 83rd minute on an unassisted goal by Jenna Szyluk. Szyluk made a nice move on the right sideline beating a Breaker defender. She then dribbled toward goal where her cross hit the hands of the goalkeeper and trickled behind her into the net.
Power head coach Tom Sermanni started the game with a backline of Lindsey Jones, Lauren Orlandos, Cheryl Salisbury and Margaret Tietjen, none of whom played with the Power last season. With Shannon Boxx playing d-mid, the Power won just about every ball in the air.
"These games are good just to have an opportunity to get a look at some of our players," head coach Tom Sermanni said.
