(Bridgewater Township, NJ) - The New Britain Bees (1-1, 36-35) defeated the Somerset Patriots (1-1, 43-29) 7-6 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening to even up the three-game weekend series at a victory apiece.
New Britain starting pitcher Devin Burke tallied a no-decision in the ballgame after allowing five runs on nine hits (two home runs) in five and one-third innings on the mound, walking and striking out one. Somerset starting pitcher Liam O'Sullivan also did not factor in the game's final outcome, giving up four runs on five hits (two home runs) across six innings of work, walking one while striking out five. Jim Fuller closed the contest out in the bottom half of the ninth inning for his team-leading tenth save of the campaign.
Trailing 4-0 in the top of the third frame. Darren Ford got the visitors on the scoreboard by way of a solo home run to left field, his third big fly of the campaign. Down 5-1 as the seventh inning rolled around, the Bees sent ten batters to the plate, scoring six runs on six hits to take their first lead of the night 7-5, highlighted by a pair of four-baggers, the first being a mammoth two-run blast to left off the bat of Jason Rogers, extending his hitting streak to a season-best 14 consecutive games overall (the longest active hit streak on the ballclub), and the latter a go-ahead, three-run tater to right produced by Logan Moore off losing pitcher Luis Cruz (1-3), his second roundtripper in as many nights versus the Patriots. Down to their final strike in the last of the ninth inning, Ramon Flores stepped into the batter's box just a single away from the cycle (3-4 with an RBI double, a triple, and a solo home run entering the plate appearance), and on the seventh pitch seen from Fuller he launched a fly ball over the head of Alejandro De Aza and off the wall in straightaway centerfield. A wild ricochet saw the baseball head away from De Aza and towards the direction of Bijan Rademacher, and the Bees right fielder began a perfectly executed relay by hitting the cutoff man in second baseman Jonathan Galvez, who proceeded to throw home to his backstop Moore who slapped the tag on Flores as Patriots third base coach Glen Barker decided to wave in his speedy leadoff batter, but the attempt at a game-tying inside the park home run went by the waste side as New Britain was able to hang on for a most dramatic come-from behind one-run victory, handing reliever David Roseboom (1-0) his first-ever Atlantic League win in the process. Ford, Rademacher, and Galvez each had a pair of hits in the winning effort.
The Bees return to New Britain Stadium on Tuesday, July 16th when they welcome in the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs to begin a three-game midweek series and six-game homestand.
