Newport Gulls News Release

DANBURY, Conn. - Newport (12 - 12) snapped its three-game losing streak with a 9-7 win over the Danbury Westerners (11 - 15) on Saturday night at Rogers Park. UCLA's Holden Powell was sharp in his five-inning performance, giving up just one run on four hits while striking out ten as he earned his first win of the season. Nate Wrighter picked up his league-leading sixth save of the summer when he shut the door on the Westerners in the ninth.

Newport jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on RBIs by Kody Hoese and Stevie Mangrum. Already leading 2-1 headed into the fourth, the Gulls put together a six-run inning which included three walks, a Danbury error, and three hits. Tim Tawa and Zach Britton each recorded RBI singles to help stretch Newport's lead to 8-1.

Holden Powell worked out of multiple bases-loaded jams throughout the contest and kept Danbury hitters off-balance the entire night with a good mix of off-speed pitches. The Westerners' sole run off Powell came in the bottom of the second when Nico Popa was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Powell was able to refocus and strike out Randy Taveras to end the inning.

Once into the Newport bullpen, Danbury battled its way back into the ballgame with a five-run bottom of the sixth inning. Augie Mihlbauer recorded a quick out before giving up a solo homerun to Spencer Harbert. Jeremiah Burke came in to replace the TCU lefty but conceded a three-run homer to Justin Lebek before collecting the final out of the frame. Through six innings, Newport held onto an 8-6 lead as Dartmouth's Austen Michel added an inning of scoreless relief in the eighth. Each team traded a run in the seventh, Newport's coming off a solo homerun by Tim Tawa, but Nate Wrighter closed things out for the Gulls with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

The Gulls will next take the field on Monday night in Game 4 of the Pell Bridge Series versus the Ocean State Waves (12 - 11) at Cardines Field, first pitch 6:35 p.m. Monday's contest will be sponsored by Clements' Marketplace, where 500 sunglasses and sunscreen will be given away at the ballpark!
