Game #127/Road #68
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals play Myrtle Beach for the last time in the 2009 regular season from BB&T Coastal Park this evening beginning at 7:05 p.m. The Pelicans, who currently have the lowest winning percentage overall (.405) in the CL, are currently two games back for playoff spot in the Southern Division. The P-Nats are still on the outside looking in as they still trail the Wilmington Blue Rocks by 2.5 games in the Northern Division after Wilmington's 5-3 extra-inning victory over Lynchburg. The Hillcats, who won the first half title by 7.0 full games were officially eliminated from the second half crown on Wednesday. *The Blue Rocks' Magic Number for the Second Half Division title is down to 10.*
VS. THE PELICANS: The P-Nats clinched their fourth season series against a CL opponent with their win last night and now own a 11-7 advantage in their season set with the Pelicans including a 5-3 mark from BB&T Coastal Field. Potomac's bats were hot when paired with Myrtle pitching entering this series but Potomac has managed just 15 hits over the first three contests in this set which has seen their team batting average dip from .301 to .282 at start of business day today. Doing the best Bird hunting lately has been P-Nats leadoff man Michael Martinez who now has 12 knocks in six games (.444) with Myrtle Beach including six extra-base hits, 5 RBI and seven runs scored. On the hill P-Nats staff owns a season-ERA of 4.01 and two shutouts vs. Rocket Wheeler's club. One P-Can who loves swinging against Potomac is C.J. Lee who in 12 games has tabulated seven extra-base hits while driving in 6 RBIs and hitting .378 (14-for-37).
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTERS: LHP Richard Sullivan, 21, was the 11th round selection of the Atlanta Braves in the 2008 Draft out of Savannah College of Art & Design. He's the second player ever drafted out of SCAD, following teammate and fellow pitcher Ryan Pope (Yankees, 2007). Prior to joining the Braves, Sullivan was named to the NAIA All-American second team in addition to being crowned as the Florida Sun Conference and NAIA Region XIV Player of the Year after leading the Bees to a school-record 33 wins. In his first professional season last year, Sullivan went a combined 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 12 games, all starts with Danville and Low-A Rome. After losing two of his first three starts with the R-Braves, Sullivan allowed just one earned run in four of his last five appearances.
The young left-hander has already played at three different levels of the Braves system in 2009 starting off with an impressive 4-1 record with the Low-A Rome Braves in the month of April. He soon moved up to pitch for the Pelicans where he started off strong going 2-1 in five May starts including a complete game shutout against Winston-Salem on May 27. Since then, Sullivan is winless losing his last 10 decisions with the Pelicans and went 0-1 with a 9.45 ERA after a brief call-up (three starts) to Double-A Mississippi at the end of June. Despite the lengthy losing skid, Sullivan has not allowed more than four earned runs in only one of his 17 starts with Myrtle. He has yielded just five earned runs on 10 hits in 10.2 IP against Potomac in two starts.
