Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Wilmington, DE --- The Potomac Nationals battered Wilmington pitchers for 14 runs on 17 hits en route to a 14-2 drubbing of the Blue Rocks before a sellout crowd of 7,198 at Frawley Stadium on Wednesday night. Potomac sent nine batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring six times off Andrew Dobies (2-2) to blow the game wide open.
The largest crowd of the season arrived anticipating post-game fireworks, but were treated to an early display from the Nationals hitters. After scoring a single run in the top of the first off Dobies, the flood gates were opened in the third. Two errors by Wilmington allowed Potomac to bat around and take a 7-0 lead. All six runs in the inning were unearned.
Dobies was chased from the game in the fourth inning after allowing consecutive one-out singles to Henry Mateo and Greg Thissen. Juan Cedeno came on in relief and allowed two run-scoring hits on two pitches, including a two-run triple from Frank Diaz. Dobies was charged with nine runs (three earned) on 10 hits over three and a third innings, his shortest outing of the season.
The Nationals tacked on four more off Kyle Bono in the eighth inning, including a tremendous three-run home run to left field by Vince Rooi, his first of the season. Rooi finished the game 4-for-5 with five RBI.
Bryan Goelz provided the only runs of the night for the Blue Rocks with a two-run homer to rightfield off Armando Galarraga (3-4), his second of the year.
The Nationals and Blue Rocks will conclude their three-game series with the rubber match at 7:05 p.m. Thursday night. For tickets or more information, call (302) 888-BLUE or visit the official website of the Wilmington Blue Rocks, www.bluerocks.com.
Game Notes: The 14 runs and 17 hits are the most allowed by the Rocks this season.
Iggy Suarez had his season-long 11 game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-3 night at the plate. Scott Youngbauer extended his streak to seven games in a row with a hit in the sixth.
