
Portland Thorns FC Forward Sophia Smith Named June Player of the Month

CHICAGO - The National Women's Soccer League announced today that Portland Thorns FC forward Sophia Smith has been named the Player of the Month for the month of June by the NWSL Media Association.
Currently second in the 2022 NWSL Golden Boot race, Smith notched five of her eight goals in June, including a pair of braces in a 4-0 win over the Houston Dash on and a 6-0 rout of the Orlando Pride. Leading the league in both shots (30) and shots on goal (20), Smith also tallied a goal in Portland's 2-2 draw against San Diego Wave FC.
Smith also demonstrated her scoring versatility in Week 7, converting on the first two penalty kick attempts of her NWSL career in back-to-back games. An asset offensively for the Thorns this month, the forward has recorded either a goal or an assist in every Thorns game dating back to May 28.
The Windsor, Colorado native was one of 26 players selected to represent the U.S. for an upcoming pair of friendlies against Colombia on June 25 and June 28, as well as the Concacaf W Championship from July 4-11 in Mexico.
The NWSL Player of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
