Portland Thorns FC Forward Christine Sinclair Voted NWSL Player of the Month

July 1, 2016 - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) News Release

CHICAGO - Portland Thorns FC forward Christine Sinclair was voted the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Month by the NWSL Media Association for the month of June of the 2016 NWSL season.

Sinclair, 33, had three goals and an assist in June to help the Thorns to a league-best 3-0-1 record in June as Portland extended their unbeaten start to the season to 11 games - the second-longest streak in league history behind the NWSL record of 16 games without a loss set by Seattle Reign FC in 2014.

The Burnaby, British Columbia native had a goal or an assist in all four of Portland's games in the month as the Thorns took over the top spot in the NWSL standings. She scored the first goal of a match in three straight games - including two game-winning goals.

The Canada international notched her first goal of the season June 12 against the Chicago Red Stars when her pressure on Alyssa Naeher paid off as the goalkeeper's clearance struck Sinclair and rebounded in to the goal in the 25th minute of a 1-1 draw.

The University of Portland product opened the scoring again in the next game for Portland as she ran onto a through ball from midfielder Allie Long and picked a spot past Western New York Flash goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom in the 48th minute to send the Thorns on their way to a 2-0 victory on June 17.

The 2013 NWSL Second XI member scored the first goal of the game for a third-straight contest when she recorded the 20th goal of her NWSL career June 22 in the sixth minute to lead Portland to a 2-0 win against the Red Stars. She also assisted on the game-tying goal by Dagny Brynjarsdottir in the 80th minute to help the Thorns rally for a 2-1 victory June 26 against the Orlando Pride.

It is the second time Sinclair has been named as the NWSL Player of the Month after she was the first player in league history to be honored with the award for her performance during April of the 2013 season. She joins midfielder Tobin Heath (April 2016) as the second Thorns player to win the award this season.

Portland Thorns FC will return to action Saturday, July 2 at 10:30 p.m. ET against Sky Blue FC at Providence Park in Portland, Ore.

The NWSL Player of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of press that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
