Port Huron Flags News Release
(PORT HURON, MICH.) - The Port Huron Flags started off February on a high note, defeating the Muskegon Fury, 3-2, in L.C. Walker Arena, for the first time of the season.
Offensive weapon Bobby Kukulka lit up the scoreboard first, at 18:46 in the initial period, off assists from Pat Sutton and Greg Bullock. Kukulka found the net behind the league's best goaltender, Clayton Pool, despite the Flags being outshot, 21-6, by the Fury.
Bullock put the Flags up by two at 3:46 in the second, on a Colt King assist. Later in the period, Dave Van Drunen put the Fury on the board, assisted by Todd Robinson and Rustyn Dolyny. Shortly after, Adam Smyth and Robert Snowball dropped the gloves for what would be the first of two fights during the night. Prot Huron's defense came up strong, as the home team got off just one shot on puckstopper Noah Ruden, while their offense recorded 12 shots on goal.
Muskegon made a game of it in the third, when Billy Collins tied the score at twos, with Kevin Cooper and Dave Noel-Bernier assisting. Smyth and Snowball's second round earned Smyth an instigating minor and a ten-minute misconduct. Less than 30 seconds later, Kukulka netted his second power play goal, while King and Garett Cameron were credited with the assists. Muskegon won the shots-on-goal battle in the final frame, recording 17 to the Flags' seven. Ruden made 37 saves on 39 shots in the win, while Pool stopped 22 of Port Huron's 25 shots in the loss.
The Flags victory could not have come at a better time, ending an eight game drought for the Flags and handing the Fury their ninth loss of the season. Using the man-advantage was the difference for the Flags, as they went 2-for-4 on the power play, while Muskegon went 0-for-5. Port Huron travels to Quad City tomorrow to take on the Mallards, who beat the Flags at home last Saturday, 1-0.
Retiring #20 - At the Flags next home game on Friday, Feb. 9, the club will retire the number of former hockey icon Ray Germain. The ceremony is scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m., with the game against the Muskegon Fury commencing at 7:30 p.m. Don't miss out on this one of a kind opportunity to honor a member of Port Huron hockey history.
