Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks became the third team to clinch a spot in the Turner Cup Playoffs when they defeated the Bloomington PrairieThunder 3-2 Saturday night. The win gives Port Huron their third consecutive 40-win season. The Muskegon Lumberjacks and the Fort Wayne Komets punched their tickets to the playoffs earlier this month.

Bloomington threatened to take an early lead when Zach Pearson was awarded a penalty shot just 2:30 into the game, but Port Huron goalie Adam Russo made the save, making opponents 0-5 on penalty shots this season. Jamie Lovell scored his first goal in two months six minutes into the game to give Port Huron the early lead. Derek Patrosso lit the lamp at 9:45 of the first period to get back on track after his 11-game point streak was snapped last night in Dayton. Bloomington's Zach Pearson cut the Icehawks' lead in half with five minutes remaining in the opening period. The PrairieThunder outshot the Icehawks 13-9 in the first period.

Mike Kinnie's fourth goal in the last three games gave the Icehawks a two-goal advantage. Pearson scored his second goal of the night to cut the lead back to one heading into the game's final period. Bloomington outshot Port Huron 11-7 in the second period.

The PrairieThunder put 17 shots on goal in the third period, but Icehawks goalie Adam Russo stopped them all to give the Icehawks the victory. Neither team found the back of the net in the third period. The PrairieThunder nearly doubled the Icehawks shot total, ending the game with a 41-22 edge.

Russo earned the victory for Port Huron, making a season-high 39 saves. Bloomington's Andrew Martin stopped 19 of 22 shots, taking the loss.

Port Huron and Bloomington will face off again tomorrow night in Bloomington.

In other IHL action, Muskegon beat Quad City, 3-1 and Fort Wayne earned a 5-1 road victory over Dayton.

The Icehawks improve to 40-22-0-4 and sit in third place in the IHL standings with 84 points. Bloomington drops to 29-28-3-5 and remain in fourth place with 66 points. After tonight's action the Icehawks are just three points out of second place.

The Icehawks will return to McMorran Arena Tuesday night for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Bloomington PrairieThunder. Hot dogs will be just a dollar all game long.

Single game tickets for all Icehawks home games are on sale now at the McMorran Arena Box Office, any Ticket Master location or by phone. For more information, visit www.porthuronicehawks.com or call 810-966-3800.
