Port Huron Fighting Falcons News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Fighting Falcons defeated Oakland University's NCAA Division 1 club team 3-1 Saturday afternoon at McMorran Arena to finish the pre-season 2-0. The Fighting Falcons begin their second season in the NAHL Wednesday, when the take on the Alexandria Blizzard in Blaine, MN.
Port Huron built off the momentum they gained in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Traverse City North Stars.
The Oakland University Grizzlies struck first when Anthony Colizza tipped a rebound past a sprawling Max Milosek late in the first period. The power play goal was assisted by Billy Balent, who played the Fighting Falcons ten times last year as a member of the Motor City Metal Jackets.
Newcomer Ryan Murray tied it up at one at 3:11 of the second period. Sean Haltam earned an assist on the goal, which may have been deflected by Alex Archibald. Oakland had a chance to regain the lead with 40 seconds left in the period as Balent was awarded a penalty shot, but Milosek denied the attempt to keep the game tied going into the third period.
Adam Frank, who lead the Fighting Falcons with 30 points last season, scored near the halfway mark of the third period to put Port Huron on top for good. Jake Goldberg assisted on the play. Zach Mohr scored four minutes later to seal the victory for the Fighting Falcons. Murray earned his second point of the day with an assist on the goal at 13:57.
Milosek was solid, and at times spectacular, in net for the Fighting Falcons. Oakland had many chances to chip away at the Port Huron lead late in the third period, but the Lapeer native turned aside each one.
Corey Hrischuk kept Oakland in the game with great play between the pipes for the Grizzlies, but persistent aggressive play offensively by the Fighting Falcons ultimately got the best of him.
The Fighting Falcons will travel to Blaine, Minnesota for the NAHL Showcase next week, where they will play the first four games of the 2011-12 regular season.
2011-12 Season tickets are still available for just $150 at the Fighting Falcons office inside McMorran Arena.
