
Port Huron Extends Unbeaten Streak To Nine Games With Victory

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks defeated the Bloomington PrairieThunder 2-1 on Saturday in front of 2,599 fans at McMorran Arena. The win was the Icehawks second consecutive victory over the PrairieThunder and their 11th triumph in 12 contests with Bloomington this season. They also defeated their rival 3-2 at McMorran Arena on Friday.
The Icehawks soar to a three game winning streak and a nine game unbeaten streak. They also extend their home point streak to eight games. With a record of 34-16-5-1 and 74 points, Port Huron holds on to first place in the International Hockey League standings with a two point lead over the second place Muskegon Lumberjacks. Fifth place Bloomington dips to 23-28-1-3 with 50 points.
The first goal of the contest came off the stick of Derek Patrosso at 12:42 in the second period. The marker was the rookie's 16th of the season and extended his goal streak to three games. Derek Merlini and Tab Lardner were credited with assists. Lardner then extended the Icehawks lead to 2-0 when he scored on a pass from Kris Vernarsky at 7:43 in the third period.
Bloomington finally got on the board at 17:18 in the third frame when Mike Kusy scored his first professional goal to spoil the Icehawks bid for their sixth shutout of the season.
The Icehawks outshot the PrairieThunder 28-24. Icehawks goalie Larry Sterling made 23 saves on 24 shots to earn the win. Bloomington's Jason Wolfe turned aside 26 of 28 shots. Both teams were scoreless on the power play despite three opportunities.
The Icehawks play four games next week as they continue their run toward the Turner Cup Playoffs. They visit Kalamazoo on Wednesday, host the same Bloomington PrairieThunder on Friday, travel to Muskegon on Saturday and face a rematch with Kalamazoo at home on Sunday.
