
Port Huron Extends Home Winning Streak To 11 Games With Victory

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks rallied from an early deficit on Friday and scored five goals over the last forty minutes to defeat the Dayton Gems 6-3 at McMorran Arena and extend their home winning streak to 11 games.
The first place Icehawks improve to 15-2-0-0 on home ice this season and 25-8-0-3 overall, with a two point lead over the second place Muskegon Lumberjacks. The fourth place Gems fall to 16-17-3-1.
The Gems scored all three of their goals in the first period to take an early 3-1 lead, but the Icehawks fought back with three goals in the second period and two in the third stanza to earn their seventh win in eight games with Dayton this season.
The Icehawks kicked off the barrage with a power play goal from Brandon Naurato at 6:05 in the second. He was assisted by Mike Gershon and Adam Russo. Just over four minutes later, Tab Lardner beat goalie Ryan Mior to tie the contest 3-3. Kerry Bowman and Rob Cowan assisted on the play.
The Icehawks continued the onslaught as the period wound down and took their first lead of the game with a Mike Gershon goal at 18:23. He was assisted by Mickael Bedard and Derek Patrosso. Shots were tied 11-11 in the second.
The Icehawks poured on two more goals in the third period, including Jason Kostadine's first of the season at 3:27 on assists from Lardner and Cowan and a goal by Patrosso at 18:20. Pete Rouleau assisted on the Patrosso goal. The Icehawks held a 10-8 shots advantage in the third period and outshot the Gems 34-28 overall.
Dayton's Mike Vaskivuo scored twice in the first period and A.J. MacLean tallied a power play goal to give the Gems a 3-1 lead after the first 20 minutes, despite being outshot by the Icehawks 13-9 in the period. Vaskivuo and MacLean scored just 21 seconds apart with goals at 10:15 at 10:36 to make it a 2-0 game, before Bedard tallied his 22nd of the season at 14:55 to put the Icehawks on the board. Vaskivuo lit the lamp again before the period came to a close.
Icehawks goaltender Adam Russo relieved Larry Sterling after the first period and stopped all 19 shots he faced to help his team to victory. Sterling made six saves on nine shots in the opening period. Gems goaltender Mior made 20 saves on 24 shots, before being replaced by Derek MacIntyre after two periods. MacIntyre turned away 8 of 10 shots in the third.
