Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release
[WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.] â Kevin Swider and David Bagley each had two goals and three assists as the first-place Knoxville Ice Bears defeated the Winston-Salem Polar Twins 6-1 Saturday night in front of a crowd of 1,539 at Joel Coliseum Annex.
The Ice Bears wasted no time taking control of the game as Curtis Menzul put Knoxville up 1-0 only 1:10 into the game on the Bears' first shot of the game. Menzul took advantage of the lack of Polar Twins defensive coverage in front of the net to tally his fifth goal of the season. David Bagley and Kevin Swider received assists on the play. Swider made it 2-0 later in the period with his 19th of the season.
The Ice Bears began the second period as they ended the first, scoring on the power play only 13 second into the frame. Bagley got credit for the tally, his 15th of the season, with K.J. Voorhees and Menzul receiving the assists.
Late in the second period, the Ice Bears capitalized on an injury to Polar Twins defenseman Mike Walling. With Walling making his way to the bench with a facial laceration, Knoxville defenseman Matt Moore raced down the wide-open left wing and beat Polar Twins goaltender Jomar Cruz for his first goal of the season and a 4-0 Ice Bears lead.
After that, the game turned even uglier when Polar Twins Head Coach Bryan Wells disagreed with a call made by referee Kirk Wood. Wells was ejected from the game, receiving a minor penalty for disputing an official decision, a game misconduct, and a gross misconduct.
In the third, Winston-Salem got one back on Shaun Aebig's 11th goal of the season at 7:24 of the period. Trevor Karasiewicz received an assist on the play, extending his point streak to seven games. Chester Gallant also received an assist giving him 17 points on the season.
Voorhees capped a strong night with two goals late in the third period to give the Ice Bears the 6-1 victory.
The Polar Twins return to the ice Thursday night when the Huntsville Havoc come to Winston-Salem for a 7:30 p.m. faceoff. Friday the Twins will travel to Jacksonville before returning home Saturday for a NASCAR Night featuring special NASCAR-themed jerseys which fans will have the opportunity to bid on during the game. That game will also begin at 7:30 p.m.
