Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on the Minnesota Thunder Sunday night at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island, gates open at 5 PM with kick off set for 6 PM. The Battery (12-4-10, 46 points) enters the week in third position in the USL1 standings six points behind the first place Portland Timbers; Charleston has a clinched a berth in the 2009 playoffs.
The Thunder (5-12-8, 23 points) enters the week in 9th position in the USL1 standings nine points outside the last playoff spot; the top seven teams advance to the post-season.
Charleston's last match was a 0-0 tie with the Portland Timbers in a game played at Blackbaud Stadium last Friday night. Charleston played the majority of the game a man short after Ian Fuller was sent-off in the 26th minute. As a result Fuller will serve a one-game suspension and will not be available for selection on Sunday.
The Battery continued to press the Timbers despite losing Fuller and had several good chances to break the deadlock, out-shooting Portland 8-5. The tie meant that the Timbers USL record unbeaten streak extended to 24 games.
The Minnesota Thunder are coming off a 3-1 loss versus Puerto Rico in a game played in Bayoman, PR last Saturday night. Minnesota took an early lead through forward Melvin Tarley in the 6th minute but the Islanders rallied and scored three unanswered goals to win the game.
The Thunder are led by head coach Donny Gramenz, a former Minnesota player who took over on an interim basis midway through the 08 season. Gramenz sparked the Thunder to an improbable playoff run that saw them lose narrowly to the eventual champions, the Vancouver Whitecaps in the first round.
Gramenz played 212 games for the Minnesota Thunder and was a member of the team that lost to the Charleston Battery in the 2003 final.
