Pittsfield Colonials News Release
Pittsfield, Mass. - With their inaugural season starting in May, Pittsfield's Can-Am League professional baseball club announced on Wednesday the team's nickname, the "Colonials," and named Brian Daubach as field manager.
"Colonials" was selected from more than 1,000 entries submitted for a name-the-team contest promoted by Pittsfield's major local daily newspaper, the Berkshire Eagle. Other finalists in the contest included the Green Sox, Pittbulls and Power. "There were certainly a host of fantastic names for consideration," said general manager Greg Martin. "The winning selection of Colonials will be an important part of the ballpark experience that we believe fans will enjoy."
Daubach, 38, returns to the city where he played as a member of the New York-Penn League's Pittsfield Mets in 1992, his second year in professional baseball.
The former Boston Red Sox slugger spent the 2009 season as the manager of the Can-Am League's New Hampshire Defenders, who relocated to Pittsfield early this winter. "I'm looking forward to returning to my professional baseball roots and the rich baseball history of Pittsfield and Wahconah Park," said Daubach.
The announcement kicks off the return of professional baseball to Pittsfield after a six-year absence. Team management also formally released the club's logo, while the club's web site at www.pittsfieldcolonials.com and offices at 2 South Street in Pittsfield will be up and running shortly.
The Colonials will play their home games at historic 3,500-seat Wahconah Park, starting with their opener on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31 against the New Jersey Jackals.
