MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans pitching staff combined to squash the hot-hitting Lynchburg Hillcats in a 2-0 win at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark on Saturday night.
Paul Richan allowed just four hits across 3.2 innings without allowing a run for the Pelicans (1-2) in his season debut to set the tone early. Ryan Kellogg (1-0) took his place in the fourth inning, recording the last out to get the Birds out of the inning. Kellogg threw 3.1 innings, striking out four while surrendering three hits.
After Wladimir Galindo recorded the first hit of the game for the Birds in the second inning, he scored on a Tyler Payne single and an error to make it 1-0 Myrtle Beach. Payne came around to score after a wild pitch moved him to third and another passed ball brought him home to make it 2-0.
The Hillcats threatened in the top of the ninth inning. Gavin Collins led off the inning with a single to bring the tying run to the plate. After Jonathan Laureano struck out, Tyler Friis drew a walk to put the tying run aboard. With two outs and two runners on in the ninth, Steven Kwan singled to left, but Kevonte Mitchell threw out Collins at home to end the game.
