Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, ILL. (JULY 15, 2016) - The Southern Illinois Miners had three hits in the game on Friday night at CONSOL Energy Park in Washington, but two of them were home runs, including a go-ahead shot by captain STEVE MARINO as they beat the Washington Wild Things 4-2 to take the first of the three-game weekend series to begin their post-all-star break schedule.

It was Washington that snagged the early lead when starter DYLLON NUERNBERG walked two in a row with two outs followed by a two-run double by Austin Wobrock that gave the Wild Things a 2-0 lead. But the Miners fought back the following inning, getting on the board with a two-out RBI single from NOLAN EARLEY that made the score 2-1 Washington.

In the fourth, with a man on first, Marino then vaulted the Miners in front with a go-ahead, two-run blast to left off Washington starter Luke Wilkins (2-2), his team-best 11th of the season, that made it 3-2 Miners. CRAIG MASSEY adding a solo shot in the fifth to make the score 4-2, and despite that being the last baserunner the Miners would have in the contest, the pitching held down the forth, allowing no more runs in the contest.

Nuernberg (4-1) would settle down to pitch six innings while striking out six, ZACH COOPER and CHRIS DEBOO combined for a scoreless seventh in which the Wild Things left the bases loaded. EVAN MOTT and ADAM LOPEZ, who tossed the ninth for his second save, finished off the game as the Miners improved to 35-17 on the season and took the series opener.

Southern Illinois will go for the series victory on Saturday night at CONSOL Energy Park, sending DAN LUDWIG to the hill against Washington right-hander Trevor Foss at 6:05 p.m.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
