Freedom Streak Snapped in First Game of Second Half
July 15, 2016 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
Joliet, Ill. - The Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, had their five-game winning streak snapped in a 16-3 loss to the Joliet Slammers.
Florence (21-31) took a 3-1 lead early, but saw Joliet (29-23) emphatically place themselves back atop the East division.
The Freedom started their scoring early against Joliet starter Liam O'Sullivan. Daniel Fraga drew a walk to lead off the ballgame and then Taylor Oldham laid down a bunt that hugged the third-base line for a single. After both runners moved up on a passed ball, Austin Newell grounded out to third, scoring Fraga. Andrew Godbold followed with a sacrifice fly to left that put the Freedom ahead 2-0.
After Joliet scored one in the second, the Freedom answered with one of their own in the third. With two away, Oldham pulled a double down the left-field line. Then Austin Newell ripped a two-bagger to right, putting the Freedom ahead 3-1.
The Slammers took the lead with a four-spot in the bottom of the third and never looked back, scoring four more in the fourth to take a 9-3 lead, and storming ahead with two more three-spots in the seventh and eighth.
Marc Flores led the Slammers' attack with four hits, four runs scored, and four RBIs. Carter Bell also posted three doubles and four RBIs as the team posted 20 hits. Liam O'Sullivan earned the win with a quality start.
Newell knocked in two runs, while Oldham scored a pair. Oldham and Godbold finished with multi-hit games for the Freedom. Jordan Kraus took the loss, tossing 3 1/3 innings and allowing nine runs (five earned) and seven hits.
The Freedom look to bounce back tomorrow in game two against the Slammers. Jeremy Gooding (3-5, 4.09 ERA) will be on the hill against Sean Townsley (4-4, 4.34 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
