Pitcher and Player of the Week Named
April 27, 2015 - Southern League (SL1) News Release
MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for April 20th through the 26th. Righthander Jaime Schultz of the Montgomery Biscuits was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Tennessee Smokies first baseman Dan Vogelbach was chosen as Player of the Week for the second consecutive period.
In 12 innings over two starts, Schultz led the league and all Double-A hurlers with 17 strikeouts. The Castleton, New York native posted a 0.75 ERA in that time, tied for lowest among all pitchers with more than one start. Furthermore, Schultz limited opposing batters to a .171 batting average, while recording a WHIP of 0.83. In his first start of the week against Mobile on April 20th, the righty carried a no-hitter through his six innings of work, striking out eight batters over that time, as the Biscuits took a 16-1 win over the visiting BayBears. He followed the outing with another dominant performance on the 25th, this time coming against Jackson. The High Point University (NC) product allowed just one run in another six innings, while fanning nine Generals to help lead Montgomery to a 7-4 victory.
In just six games last week, Vogelbach continued his torrid start to the 2015 campaign with a league-leading eight runs, six extra-base hits, 21 total bases, three homeruns, 10 RBIs, .517 on-base percentage, .913 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.430. He also posted top five numbers with three doubles and six walks. The Bishop Verot High School product (Fort Myers, FL) hit safely in all six contests, beginning with his first homerun of the season on April 20th. Two days later, in a 13-4 win over the Jackson Generals, Vogelbach went 2-for-5 at the plate with a homerun and five RBIs. His best performance of the week, though, came against the visiting Chattanooga Lookouts on the 25th, where he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, a homerun, three RBIs and a pair of walks. With his second consecutive selection, Vogelbach became the second Smoky in as many seasons to claim consecutive Player of the Week honors, after Kris Bryant did the same on June 2nd and June 9th last year.
