Portland Pirates News Release
Providence, RI - The Portland Pirates will put their 3 game road winning streak on the line this afternoon when they travel to Providence to face the Bruins. Puck drop is 3:05 pm for the first of 4 road games that will bring the Pirates to Providence, Norfolk, and Hartford.
The Pirates dropped a 2-1 decision to the Springfield Falcons in a shootout at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Former Pirate Mike McKenna made 35 saves in regulation and overtime, with Gilbert Brule scoring the lone Pirates goal. Mike Lee got the start for the Pirates, stopping 30 shots in regulation and overtime but dropping his first career shootout decision.
Providence is coming off a 4-3 loss to the Norfolk Admirals on Friday night. Former Pirate Nick Johnson scored for the Bruins, along with Ryan Spooner and Mike Moore, but 4 first period goals from the Admirals proved to be too much for Providence to overcome. Niklas Svedberg made 30 saves in the defeat.
Key Bank Key to the Game
Road Warriors: With a 4 game road swing looming, the Pirates need to get off on the right foot. A win at Providence this afternoon will not only start the road set off well, but will extend the team's road winning streak to 4 games.
The Pirates and Bruins last faced off on October 12th at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, with Providence picking up the 5-2 decision. Both Jordan Martinook and Jordan Szwarz scored for the Pirates, but 3 straight Providence goals in the second period gave Providence a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Svedberg made 30 saves for the Bruins while Lee made 23 for the Pirates.
Today's game is one of only two Sunday contests in the American Hockey League this week, and the only Eastern Conference game. It can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County. The game can also be heard online at portlandpirates.com by clicking "Listen Live" and can be seen live on AHL Live at ahllive.com. The pregame show starts at 2:45 with Jeff Mannix.
