Portland Pirates News Release
Providence, RI - Gilbert Brule scored the game winning goal on an overtime power play and Louis Domingue made a career high 43 saves as the Pirates defeated the Providence Bruins 4-3 in overtime at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence. The win gives the Pirates 5 points out of a possible 6 points on the weekend and a 5 game point streak.
Louis Domingue, making his second career AHL start and second AHL start against Providence, was tested early and often. The Bruins put 16 shots on goal in the first, and outshot the Pirates 11-1 halfway through the period. However, the Pirates struck first, with Chris Brown registering the goal at the 12 minute mark of the first. Brown's goal was his 4th of the year and was assisted by Andy Miele and Brandon McMillan, giving Miele the first double digit point total for a Pirate this season. Bobby Robins tied the game for the Bruins at 18:35, his second goal of the year, and touching off a scrum between the teams.
Former Pirate Nick Johnson gave the Bruins the lead in the second. After a furious exchange of chances between the two teams, Johnson's shot bet Domingue at the 2:31 mark of the second to give Providence the 2-1 lead. Chris Casto extended the lead to 3-1 after scoring his first professional goal off a face off at the 10:48 mark, but Tobias Rieder struck back for the Pirates. Rieder's team leading 6th goal of the year, at 15:22 of the second, brought the Pirates within 1 as the second period came to a close. Ethan Werek and Chris Summers picked up assists on Rieder's goal, good for Werek's first point of the season.
In the third, the Pirates tied the game on an odd play, as Brandon McMillan slipped the puck past Malcolm Subban on the third chance to score his second goal of the game. Chris Brown had the assist to give both Brown and McMillan a goal and an assist on the night. Despite multiple opportunities for each side, regulation expired with the score tied at 3.
In overtime, the Pirates got a power play after Keven Miller was called for tripping and Gilbert Brule would capitalize. Brule's 6th goal of the year at 1:43 of the extra period gave the Pirates the 4-3 victory and 5 out of 6 points on the weekend. Brown and Brandon Gormley picked up the assists on Brule's game winner, which tied him for the team lead with Rieder and gave him a 4 game goal scoring streak.
Louis Domingue made 43 saves, a career high, to win his second career AHL start and second career start against the Bruins. Domingue's 43 saves are the second most any Pirates goaltender has had to make this season, behind Mark Visentin's 45 saves against the Worcester Sharks on November 8th. The win also gives the Pirates a 4 game win streak on the road and a 4-0-0-1 record over their last 5 games.
The Pirates get back to action next Friday for the first game of a two game series as they face the Norfolk Admirals in Norfolk. Puck drops at 7:30 PM for the first matchup between the two teams since the 2010-11 season. The game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
