Pirates Power Past Monarchs

October 19, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, Maine - Andy Miele tied a 2011-12 American Hockey League game high with five points and Nathan Oystrick contributed two power-play goals to lead the Portland Pirates to a 5-3 win over the Manchester Monarchs in an AHL game played this afternoon in front of 5,285 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Miele's five points came in the fashion of two goals and three assists and line-mate Ryan Duncan contributed three points on a goal and two assists as Portland ended a two-game winless streak and improved their record to 2-1-0-1 on the season.

Jordan Nolan, Marc-Andre Cliche and Linden Vey each tallied a goal for the Monarchs and Martin Jones gave up as many goals (five) as he previously did in his prior four starts, as Manchester lost their second straight game and dropped to 3-3-0-0.

The two teams traded power-play goals in the first period with Nolan getting the visitors on the board first, capitalizing on a breakaway only two minutes into the game, and Oystrick following with a slap shot from the left circle at the 9:29 mark. In the second period, Oystrick struck again for the Pirates, again on the power play, blasting a one-timer pass from Miele past Jones. Heading into the third period with a one-goal advantage, Portland experienced a taste of bad luck as an odd bounce off the glass, behind goaltender Justin Pogge, ricocheted passed Pogge and directly on top of the crease where Cliche tapped it home to give the game its second tie. The Pirates would quickly bounce back on goals by Miele and Duncan, 2:47 apart, to give the hosts a comfortable cushion heading into the final 10 minutes of the game. Vey brought the visitors back to within a goal with 5:38 remaining on his first tally of the season, but Miele would go on to ice the game with an empty-net goal to conclude his monumental night.

The Pirates out-shot the Monarchs by a 28-24 margin as Pogge earned his first win of the season, evening his record at 1-1-0. Jones received the loss in net for Manchester, falling to 3-2-0 on the season.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from the Pirates: 1. Miele; 2. Oystrick; 3. Duncan.

The Pirates will continue their three-game homestand on Friday when the Adirondack Phantoms come to town for a 7 p.m. faceoff.
