Phantoms Receive Two; One to Philly

October 19, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

Brayden Schenn is going to the show! On Wednesday, high-scoring Adirondack Phantoms forward Brayden Schenn was recalled by the Philadelphia Flyers, according to Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren. For Schenn, who leads both AHL rookies and the Phantoms with eight points, this is his first recall to Philadelphia. Adirondack also received Harry Zolnierczyk and Zac Rinaldo from Philadelphia. Zolnierczyk comes to the Phantoms after an exciting week in which he scored his first NHL goal, in Ottawa, on Tuesday, while Rinaldo comes back to the Phantoms after leading the team in penalty minutes (331) last season.

For Schenn, 20, this is the third call up to the NHL of his career, after he played in nine NHL games for the Los Angeles Kings over the past two seasons. Drafted by Los Angeles in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the shifty center came to the Flyers organization in the same deal which brought Wayne Simmonds to Philadelphia, and sent for Flyers captain Mike Richards and Rob Bordson to Los Angeles. In four games in the Flyers organization, all with the Phantoms, Schenn has four goals and four assists this season. Schenn's eight points lead AHL rookies and all Phantoms players, while the native of Saskatoon, SK., long considered one of hockey's top prospects, sits one back of the AHL's overall lead in goals at the time of his callup. For the offensively-talented Schenn, his early-season scoring binge with the Phantoms was highlighted by his first professional hat trick, which came as part of Adirondack's 6-3 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the Glens Falls Civic Center on October 14.

Rinaldo, 21, comes to the Phantoms after playing in five regular-season games for Philadelphia to start the season. With Philadelphia, the pesky winger out of Hamilton, ONT. registered his first NHL assist and 28 penalty minutes, while having his tenure highlighted by a bone-crushing hit against Los Angeles' star defenseman Drew Doughty. Known for his pugilistic tendencies, physical play and ability to agitate opponents, Rinaldo led the Phantoms with 331 penalty minutes in 60 games last season, while adding three goals and six assists. Rinaldo's hustling, never-say-die style earned him a call up to Philadelphia for the 2010-11 Stanley Cup Playoffs, where he played in his first two NHL games. A former Barrie Colt, London Knight and Mississauga St. Michael Major in the Ontario Hockey League, Rinaldo was drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round (178th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Zolnierczyk, 24, returns to the Phantoms after a one-game call up to Philadelphia. In Zolnierczyk's one game with Philadelphia, Tuesday night in Ottawa, the former Brown University captain made his NHL debut and scored his first NHL goal, as the Flyers beat the Senators by a score of 7-2. Zolnierczyk's goal, a highlight-reel deke of Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson, dazzled on Tuesday's NHL highlight shows and showed the sort of flashy style that Harry Z has already displayed in four games with the Phantoms this season. Zolnierczyk's one goal and three assists for Adirondack this season all came in the team's 6-3 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on October 14, and the former Ivy League Player of the Year had three goals and two assists in 16 games for the Phantoms last season.
