Massachusetts Pirates News Release
WORCESTER, MA - On Saturday, March 12 Josh Gable kicked a 33-yard game winning field goal as the Massachusetts Pirates defeated the Frisco Fighters 30-27 on Phoenix Field at the DCU Center. Today Gable is a member of the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League.
In what may be his only game with the reigning champions of the Indoor Football League in 2022, Gable was three of seven on field goal attempts, converting kicks from 35, 24, and 33 yards. He also made all three of his extra point attempts in what was the season opener for Massachusetts. His performance marked the second time in less than a season where Gable's field goal on a game's final play defeated the Fighters.
Last season the 5'10" 175 lb. kicker from Kearney, NE only appeared in seven total games for the defending IFL Champions, but he made his mark with back-to-back game winning kicks on nationally televised games making headlines as he booted a 46-yard field goal with no time remaining to defeat the Tucson Sugar Skulls 37-34 on the road in week nine.
After a bye week he did it again in Texas with a 27-yard walk-off game winning field goal that handed Frisco its first loss of 2021; 38-37. After both wins Gable was named the IFL's Special Teams Player of the Week.
In six regular season games with the Pirates, Gable was seventh in made extra points and attempts going 17 of 23 for a percentage of 73.9. He was also tied for third with 10 made field goals on 19 attempts, which were fifth most in the league. His 52.6 percentage on three-pointers was tied for fourth best in the IFL. Gable's total of 49 kicking points was sixth best in the league and his 8.1 points per game ranked him first among specialists. During the season Gable made three field goals of 50 yards or more, including a 52-yarder.
Gable missed the final four regular season games due to injury but came back to kick in the Pirates opening round playoff victory against the Bismarck Bucks. In that game he made one of two field goals and was five of six on extra points. Not fully recovered from his injury, Gable, a right-footed kicker, used his left leg on kickoffs to help the Pirates earn their first ever playoff win.
Before coming to the Pirates, the former European soccer standout who played in Italy and Belgium, had a two-day stint on the practice squad with the New England Patriots in 2019. That season he also played in The Spring League and with Tucson of the IFL. Gable, who did not play football in college, also played in the IFL with Nebraska and won a United Bowl title in 2018 with the Iowa Barnstormers.
