Pirates Host Welcome Reception For Army

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates will hold a welcome reception for new head coach Tim Army on Wednesday, July 31st from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at "Rivalries," a new sports pub and grill, at 10 Cotton Street in Portland. All members of the media and the general public are invited to attend the reception.

5:45 p.m. Remarks from Tim Army, Pirates' head coach

Army was named the fifth head coach in Pirates' history on July 19, 2002. He spent the previous nine seasons as an assistant coach for the Washington Capitals, the Pirates' National Hockey League affiliate, and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Prior to working in the NHL in 1993, Army, 39, served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Providence College, from 1987-93. He also served as an assistant coach with the U.S. National Team at the World Championships in 1994 and 1996, as well as coaching the U.S. Select-17 Team to bronze and silver medals, respectively, in trips to the Pacific Cup. Army remains active in USA Hockey and coached at the Select 14 Festival in Rochester, New York last summer.

Army played his only professional season with the old Maine Mariners in 1985-86. The native of Providence, Rhode Island had eleven goals, 16 assists and ten penalty minutes in 68 games for Maine.

As a senior at Providence in 1984-85, Army led Hockey East in scoring with 74 points (27 goals, 47 assists) and earned All-America honors. He was the recipient of the Walter Brown Trophy, awarded to the best American-born player in New England, and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. Army was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 1981.

Army and his wife Sue have two sons, Derek (11) and Travis (9)..
