Portland Pirates News Release

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates announced today that voting for the newest inductee into the Portland Pirates' Hall of Fame has begun. Fans may cast their votes on-line at the Pirates' official web site, portlandpirates.com, by clicking on the "Pirates Hall of Fame Ballot" icon. The Pirates' Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 to honor those individuals who had played a significant role in Pirates' history, both on and off the ice, and who have excelled in their careers in hockey. Long-time captain Kent Hulst was the most recent inductee, having been voted into the Hall last season.

In order to be eligible, a player must have skated in at least 25 Pirates' games and, at the time of his induction, have been at least one year removed from playing for the team. Voting will conclude on Friday, August 15, 2003.

"The list of members in the Pirates' Hall of Fame is a who's who of some of our greatest all-time players," said Brian Petrovek, Pirates' CEO. "Each year, our fans give considerable thought to the voting process, and we know they will choose another deserving inductee this season."

Left wing Andrew Brunette and goalies Byron Dafoe and Olaf Kolzig were chosen as charter members of the Hall in 1999. Rugged winger Kevin Kaminski was added in 2000 and long-time defenseman Steve Poapst was inducted in 2001. All six inductees were members of the Pirates' Calder Cup Championship team in 1994.

This year's list of Pirates' Hall of Fame candidates includes defensemen Nolan Baumgartner, Patrick Boileau and Sergei Gonchar, goalie Martin Brochu and forwards Chris Jensen and Jeff Nelson. Capsule summaries of each player's career may be found on the ballot page of portlandpirates.com.
