Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers News Release
Wilkes-Barre, PA- With just over three minutes remaining in the first half against the Manchester Wolver, Pioneers' Offensive Specialist JR Thomas left the game with a lower leg injury. Later, an announcement informed the fans that the af2 2004 Rookie of the Year would not be returning to the contest.
Thomas was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley for an MRI that showed a high fracture of the player's right fibula, the non-weight baring bone in the lower leg (calve). Thomas will be out for approximately 3-4 weeks pending any complications and rehabilitation.
Statistically this season Thomas has shown a great impact not only with the Pioneers, but also throughout the league. In one half of football, Thomas had two kick off returns for a total of 88 yards, his longest being 51 yards. He left the game with a total of 105 yards. This week's league rankings show JR Thomas in the top five in several categories. He is 1st in Kick Return Yards; 2nd in All-Purpose Yards; 3rd in Kick Returns; 4th in Receiving Touchdowns and Kick Return Average; 5th in Scoring and Scoring Touchdowns.
"JR will be missed," says Head Coach Les Moss. "He is a big part of our team and a great person as well. The whole organization wishes him a speedy recovery."
"Obviously, anytime you lose your star receiver in has an impact on your team," said Pioneers President/GM Dave Berryman. "However, JR should be back in the lineup in time for the Pioneers run for the Championship!"
The Pioneers will travel to Green Bay to face the Blizzard this Friday, June 3rd at 8:30 PM EST. This Friday's game can be heard on WILK 980 AM. The Pioneers will return home to face the Albany Conquest on Saturday June 11th at 7:30 PM. Single game and group tickets are now on sale. Anyone interested in purchasing Pioneers tickets should contact the team's ticket sales office at either (570) 270-5811 or (570) 270-5813.
