Wilkes-Barre, PA- The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers will be hosting the Green Bay Blizzard on Saturday, August 6th at 7:30 PM at the Wachovia Arena. The Pioneers clinched home field with their victory over Macon last week.
Scoring with less than a minute remaining in the game and down 52-47, the Pioneers try an onsides kick to gain possession for one last drive to win the game. Davis' kick was batted out of bounds and ruled Macon's ball on the Pioneers' eight-yard line. Macon's first play is a hand off to Tyrone Myers who fumbles the ball and quickly recovers it for not gain. On the next play, Tyrone Myers is again given the chance to run the ball. The Pioneers' Jim Sodano meets him at the line of scrimmage and strips Myers of the ball. Sodano recovers the ball and runs 43-yards for an amazing touchdown giving the Pioneers the lead with 20 seconds on the clock. Macon marches their team into field goal position on the Pioneers 12-yard line. Chris Brewer has a chance to win the game but boots the ball wide left. Time expires and the Pioneers escape narrowly 53-52.
Green Bay traveled to South Georgia to face the Wildcats in front of a sold out crowd at the Albany Civic Center. Blizzard QB Johnny Turman completed 10 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns while OS Lance Taylor made five grabs for 82 yards and one touchdown. FB/LB Matt Huebner did the job on the ground with 34 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Defensively, the Blizzard had four fumble recoveries, snagged two interceptions and three sacks. Leo FenceRoy led the team's defense with six tackles.
Pioneers who are ranked in the top ten in the league include Dave Davis who is ranked 7th in scoring (kicking), field goals and field goals made. He is also ranked 5th in PAT made.
JR Thomas is still in the top ten for all-purpose yards. Rocco Forgione was knocking at the number ten spot in several categories but only broke into 9th for reception touchdowns. Jamie Hattley is still among league leaders defensively. He is ranked 4th in tackles with 102.0 and 9th in passes defended with 27.
