Pioneers complete sweep 6-2

The Pioneers played late into the night for a 6-2 win at the Berkshire Black Bears Thursday evening in Pittsfield, Mass. After a rain-delay of more than 2 hours the game finally began in a light rain at 9:06. BrianBaker drove in 2 runs on a bases loaded single in the 2nd to give Elmira the early lead. Baker's dropped pop-up out of the glove of LF Chris Sawyer made it 5-0 as 2 more were plated. Osmani Garcia singled in the 8th and eventually scored on a Bobby Hill ground out for the last Pioneer run of the evening.

Jeff Andra (2-0) worked 7 solid innings in picking up the win. The shutout was finally broken in the top of the 7th. The Pioneers had several sparkling defensive plays behind Andra to keep the Black Bears from rallying as Berkshire stranded 12 runners on the bases. Norm Hutching made a slip-and-slide diving catch to begin the game as dove in shallow CF into a pool of water. Osmani Garcia made a dazzling diving stop and turned it into an out in the 2nd inning as the Pioneer third-baseman had another good game in the field.

Elmira outscored Berkshire 16-3 in the 3-game sweep.

Eric Estes (0-1) pitching Friday night for the Pioneers in a 7:00 game at the expansion Brockton rox. It will be the first home game in the history of the Brockton franchise and has been sold out for months in advance.
