Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers News Release

(Wilkes-Barre, PA) The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers announce the assignment of WR/DB Gerald Smith for the 2007 season. The Pioneers have high expectations for Smith, who showed great promise in the three games he played in last season before being injured. During those games he received the ball three times for a total of 32 yards.

Smith (5'11, 185lb.) who spent his college football career as a Penn State Nittany Lion, recorded 46 receptions for 581 yards and one touchdown. Smith also had five carries rushing for 25 yards and one more touchdown in 30 games for Penn State.

Coach Ingold predicts that Smith's return to the Pioneers will contribute greatly to the goals set for the 2007 season. "Gerald's season-ending injury was unfortunate, but he has since worked extremely hard to return to where he was," explained Coach Ingold. "He is a high energy, very competitive football player; one who is very hungry to show everyone what he can do this year. I expect him to be one of the top receivers in the af2."

The assignment of Smith to the Pioneers' 2007 roster reunites him with Penn State's Zack Mills, who joined the Pioneers earlier in the week. The Pioneers' organization looks forward to seeing these two former teammates connect this season.
