Fayetteville Patriots News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., September 11, 2003 – The annual tryout is not a formality. Fayetteville Patriots coach Jeff Capel and assistant Sam Worthen are looking for talent that will help the Patriots win.

The Patriots are prepared to conduct their third Free Agent Tryout on October 18 and 19. For the second straight year, Southern Pines Pinecrest High School will host tryout.

A year ago, a Brooklyn, New York street ball standout named William "Junie" Sanders made the trip to Southern Pines, N.C. The left-hander impressed Capel and Worthen with his accurate jump shooting and earned an invite to the Patriots' training camp.

Sanders made the opening day roster, started five times during the 2002-2003 season and played a crucial role (8.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game) in the Patriots' regular-season championship run.

This year's two-day tryout starts Saturday morning at 9 on October 18. Players must complete the following before participating:

A registration form
A waiver and release form
A copy of their driver's license or other proof of birth
A $100 registration fee.

Players must be age 20 or higher by Nov. 22, 2003 and should submit fees before Oct. 10. "There's a lot of talent out there," Capel said. "We proved last year that if you're good, you can play for the Fayetteville Patriots. Even if you came through our Free Agent Camp."
