Peninsula Pilots News Release

HAMPTON, Va. - The Peninsula Pilots rallied for a 4-3 win in the first game of the doubleheader and the Wilson Tobs earned a split with a 7-3 win in the nightcap at Saturday evening at War Memorial Stadium.

The Pilots clinched the #3 seed in the East Division and will face the Wilmington Sharks in the first round of the CPL Playoffs. The Pilots host the Sharks at War Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night before wrapping up the series at Wilmington on Thursday and if necessary, Friday night.

GAME 1

The Pilots (28-24, 13-14) hit three home runs and rallied from a three-run deficit to pull out a 4-3 victory in a resumed game from earlier this season against the Wilson Tobs (22-31, 12-14).

Trailing 3-0 at the stopping point in the bottom of the fourth, the game resumed almost a month later with a bang as Will Shepherd (Liberty) hit a leadoff home run in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 3-1. Kyle Beam (Lane CC) joined in the fun with a solo shot over the left field wall in the fifth inning to pull within one.

In his very next at-bat, Shepherd connected for another home run for the second time, in the game this time to left-center to tie the game at three in the sixth inning.

Tied a three apiece in the seventh, the Pilots took their first lead in the ballgame when a sacrifice fly by Dom Thompson-Williams (South Carolina) plated the go-ahead run. Luke Toms (Lee) reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Connor Myers (Old Dominion). On the very next pitch, Danny Valdez (Lincoln Memorial) hit a single to left to put runners on the corners with one out. Thompson-Williams followed with a sacrifice fly to score Toms for the one-run lead. Taylor Edens (VMI) shut down the Tobs to preserve the win.

Wilson struck first in the first inning when Chad Frazier (Concord) brought in Clark Scolamiero (South Carolina) with a RBI single to right field. The Tobs added two more in the second when Marcus Mooney (South Carolina) scored two with a single to center for a quick 3-0 lead.

Edens improved to 9-1 on the season with 3 1/3 innings of relief. The right-hander retired all 10 batters he faced and struck out six Tobs.

Carson Teel (Oklahoma State) fell to 2-3 on the season, tossing five innings and giving up all four runs while striking out five.

GAME 2

In the nightcap, the Tobs jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded, a fielding error gave the Tobs the first run of the game. A RBI ground out by Phil Scrietta (Virginia Tech) added another run for the Tobs before a two-run single by Trey York (East Tennessee State).

Chad Frazier (Concord) hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning to left-center to extend the Tobs lead to 6-0.

The Pilots finally broke through in the fourth inning off of Kevin Marnon (Akron). Kerrigan was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After two quick outs, Toms hit his second triple of the night to score Kerrigan for the first Pilots run. Blaise Lezynski (Mercer) followed with an opposite field double to score Toms. On the very next pitch, Hunter Taylor (South Carolina) lined a single through the left side to score Lezynski to pull within three.

The Tobs extended their lead to four with a sacrifice fly by York to make it 7-4 in favor of the Tobs.

Marnon improved to 3-4 on the season with 4 1/3 innings of three-run ball. The southpaw now has defeated the Pilots three times this season, accounting for all his wins. Caleb Evans (Liberty) took the loss and fell to 1-3 on the season, giving up six runs (two earned) in four innings. Wes McGuire (Lenoir-Rhyne) followed with an inning of work, giving up a run, before Dario Santangelo (Mount Olive) and Robbie Hiser (Norfolk State) both pitched scoreless innings.

After a day off Sunday, the Pilots will host Edenton in the regular season finale for Fan Appreciation Night! For more information regarding the season, please visit www.peninsulapilots.com.
