Peninsula Pilots News Release
Edenton, N.C. - The Peninsula Pilots split a doubleheader with the Edenton Steamers on Friday night at Historic Hicks Field. A day after struggling offensively in an 8-2 loss against Edenton on Thursday at War Memorial Stadium, the Pilots rebounded to split a doubleheader over the Steamers in Edenton. In both games, the Pilots held 3-0 leads only to see the Steamers claw their way back into the games.
Peninsula used four home runs including the go-ahead two-run home run in the 10th inning by Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) to grab a 5-3 win in the first game of the doubleheader before falling 4-3 in the nightcap.
Continuing the game in the second inning after the game was suspended due to weather, Devin Mahoney (St. Louis) hit a solo home run to put the Pilots on the board early. Will Shepherd (Liberty) added a solo shot of his own in the third inning to put the Pilots up 2-0 early on. In the very next inning, Nick Walker (Old Dominion) added a solo shot of his own and the Pilots were up 3-0 after five innings of play.
Edenton found the scoreboard in the sixth inning with a two-run double by Tyler Ammerman (USC Aiken) to cut the deficit to one. Mitchell Price (USC-Aiken) used a RBI single in the seventh inning to tie the game up at three apiece.
The two teams remained scoreless forcing extra innings for the third time this season for the Pilots. Shepherd knocked a two-out single before Sinnen hit a two-run home run to right field to put the Pilots head 5-3. Robbie Hiser (Norfolk State) pitched a perfect 10th inning for his seventh save of the season.
Tim Edwards (Seton Hall) threw five scoreless innings and struck out six. Brett Smith (Old Dominion) picked up the win to improve to 4-1 on the season after throwing a scoreless ninth inning. Sam Beattie (Oklahoma Panhandle St) took the loss for the Steamers to fall to 1-3 on the season.
In the nightcap, the Pilots jumped ahead first with two runs in the second inning. Carpenter led off the winning with a walk before advancing to third on a double by Augustine. Walker and Franco Guardascione (Jacksonville) both followed with sacrifice flies to score Carpenter and Augustine for an early 2-0 lead.
The Pilots struck again in the next inning when Kyle Wrighte (William & Mary) and Mahoney both reached on singles to kick off the third inning. Sinnen followed with a single through the right side to plate Wrighte and put the Pilots ahead 3-0.
Backed by a solid offense, Colin Nowak (Southern Indiana) had a brilliant outing as he struck out 11 Steamers through five innings.
In the sixth, the Steamers had a single and a walk prompting a move to the bullpen to end Nowak's night. A hit by pitch loaded the bases and the Steamers tied it up with a bases clearing double by Aaron Aucker (Middle Tennessee State).
Playing in extra innings for the second time of the night, the Steamers used a leadoff triple in the ninth inning by Aucker, who came around to score on Tony Rosselli's (Indiana State) single to lift the Steamers to a split.
The Pilots return home to face the Holly Springs Salamanders on Saturday night for Kevin Eadie Night. The winner of the Kevin Eadie Spirit Award will be announced that night.
